How Does Alcohol Effect Sleep Apnea?

Some believe that because alcohol makes them feel drowsy, it will help achieve a better quality of sleep, but this is not true. Alcohol may actually worsen sleep apnea, since it relaxes the tissues of the mouth and throat, leading to further obstruction. Certain medications, including sleeping pills and medications for anxiety, muscle relaxation and pain control may have the same effect.
